longfellowThe eight paintings in the Little Miss Nations set illustrate young girls, from various countries, sitting in flowers indigenous to their countries. Vignette scenes of the are in the backgrounds. Schmucker wrote Little Miss America - Pink Poppy on the back of this painting. The city in the background is Philadelphia, PA, where Schmucker lived and studied art. He was enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1896-97 & 1898-99) and at Drexel Institute (1899-1900). While at Drexel he studied under Howard Pyle, a pre-eminent illustrator and the most influential American art teacher of his time. Pyle's students include well-known American artists N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Frank Schoonover, A. B. Frost, Phillip Goodwin, W.H.D. Koerner, and Edward Austin Abbey, among many others.
