Schmucker

fine artThe name of this set of paintings is The Adventures of a Gnome, or All's Well That Ends Well. Schmucker's gnomes are similar to Palmer Cox's brownies, imaginary "little people" who first appeared in a story in St. Nicholas magazine in 1883. The brownies traveled at night to have fun and do good deeds, and were based on the small, industrious house sprites of Scottish and English folklore. The Frog painting at left has an art nouveau style with the use of bold outlines in gold. Fantasy, as we know it today, began to evolve in the middle of the 19th century. One of the early and important fantasy writers was William Morris, who along with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones, was one of the founding members of the Aesthetic movement of Pre-Raphaelite artists in the 1860s. A flat plane, on which images are applied in rhythmic patterns, is characteristic of Japanese art. Schmucker was influenced by a number of art movements and artists, but he developed his own unique style of imagery and painting.
