![]() | In this set of four Childhood Seasons paintings Schmucker illustrates young children in the seasons of the year. The young boy at left is dressed in pajamas on Christmas Day, with the face of Santa Claus behind him. Toys are swirling in the background, and the golden orb of the moon appears behind. Seasonal sets were popular themes in the Golden Age of Postcards. Schmucker's model was his wife, Katharine. Her resemblance is evident in the young boy in this painting, and in the other children, women, and men he painted. Samuel Schmucker and Katharine Rice attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Sam fell deeply in love with Katherine. Her image with upswept hair, high cheekbones, and wide-set eyes was the inspiration for both the Schmucker Girl and the Winsch Girl designs Schmucker is best known for. |
