![]() | Childhood Days is a set of six beautiful paintings by Samuel Schmucker showing a young girl in various stages of her life, from an infant in the arms of her mother to a young woman going off to school. Schmucker's images of children were influenced by Jessie Willcox Smith, a fellow Philadelphia artist whose work focused on children. Schmucker and Smith both studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and later under Howard Pyle at Drexel Institute. The painting at left, Among the Flowers, copyright 1907 by Detroit Publishing Company, is very similar to an earlier illustration by Jessie Willcox Smith, Among the Poppies, first publish in 1903 by Scribner's magazine. |
