![]() | Eighty-eight original gouache and watercolor paintings by Samuel L. Schmucker were discovered in Montana and Utah in 1995-96. This discovery includes forty-three unpublished, unknown Schmucker images. These new images represent a very significant addition to Schmucker's known work and are shown for the first time in our book. The forty-three unpublished paintings include six additional paintings from the published sets and thirty-seven paintings that make up six new, unpublished sets. These paintings are from Schmucker's early work for the Detroit Publishing Company, c1905-06, and are considered by many to be among his best and most collectible images. The DPC published Schmucker's postcards, © 1907. Schmucker's early designs for the DPC influenced his later work for the John Winsch Company, 1909-1915. Winsch published a large number of Schmucker designs as seasonal greeting postcards, including Halloween. These are some of the most desirable and valuable American postcards on the market today (SEE AUCTION NEWS FOR 2005 PRICES REALIZED). Winsch also published Schmucker images of Christmas, New Year's, Valentines Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Thanksgiving. |
