CHAPTER III - THE HOUSE OF HAYNES

Frank Jay (F. J.) Haynes first came to Yellowstone National Park in 1881. FJ was referred to as "The Official Photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad," and he returned to the park every year for the rest of his life. F. J. established a network of Haynes Picture Shops in hotel lobbies and at scenic locations throughout the park in the 1890s and the name Haynes became synonymous with Yellowstone National Park.

Jack Ellis (J. E.) Haynes was born in 1884 and assumed ownership of Haynes, Inc., from his father in 1916. A reorganization of the souvenir and retail businesses in the national parks in 1930 allowed Haynes to sell non-Yellowstone merchandise and "other pictorial souvenirs" in his shops. Jack intended to take advantage of this opportunity and began to acquire a wide range of non-Yellowstone material for resale. One of the major acquisitions J.E. made was the bankruptcy inventory of the Detroit Publishing Company in 1932. Haynes wanted this inventory because it contained a large number of postcards and rare chromolithographic prints (Photochroms) of Yellowstone National Park.

Haynes

Jack Haynes managed and operated Haynes, Inc., for forty-six years, but would not have been as successful without the assistance of his wife, Isabel. Isabel formally assumed control of the family business in 1962 after Jack died of a heart attack, and she ran the business in Bozeman and Yellowstone Park by herself until she sold the business to Hamilton Stores, Inc. in 1968. Isabel died on April 7, 1993, and in accordance with her wishes all personal property was sold at auction.
