| The Butterfly Girls paintings are metamorphic and show the transfiguration of women into butterflies. Schmucker's transformation of women is similar to many of the paintings of mermaids in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in which the bottom half of the woman is a fish. The use of the golden orb in the painting at right is a direct influence of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This girl's wings at right are a stained-glass design, similar to designs used by Tiffany and Company at the turn of the century. She is holding a cross to her chest, suggesting a religious theme and quality to this painting. The choice of subject matter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (P. R. B.) artists was religious, medieval, literary, and contemporary themes, with an underlying ideal rooted in moral values, evident in this painting. | ![]() |
